Requirement to use your GMC number on Death Certificates

Registry Offices and certificates are refusing to accepted Medical Certificate of Cause of Deaths (MCCDs) without GMC numbers on them. GPs working using old books of blank death certificates should write their GMC number next to their signature, those using newer books will see that a field has been added to the certificates for their GMC number to be entered in.

This change has come about because a Department of Health consultation document recommended doctors should add their GMC number and print their name rather on MCCDs, rather than add information on their qualifications and residence. This is now being applied by Registry Offices, further information can be found in the documents below:
