Paid for travel vaccination activity not covered by state indemnity
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and NHS Resolution have confirmed that the Clinical Negligence Scheme for General Practice (CNSGP) does not cover the supply and administration of paid for travel vaccinations. Previously they had said this activity was covered and have apologised for the mistake.
Providing advice on travel health is covered by CNSGP, as part of a core service and it is just administering paid for vaccinations which now requires separate indemnity cover. NHS Resolution have said they will cover any claims relating to paid travel vaccinations activity between 1 April - 31 July 2019. This means practices have not retrospectively lost cover, but they do need to make sure this activity is indemnified from 1 August 2019 onwards.
NHS Resolution have published a reference sheet clarifying some common queries about what activity is covered by CNSGP.
The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has announced that it will extend its members’ indemnity cover to include travel vaccinations. We advise RCN members who wish to rely on this coverage to check with the College, rather than just assuming they are indemnified based on the press statement alone.
