Sustainability and Transformation Plans - May 2016 Update

Sustainability and Transformation Plans are set to have an impact in shaping primary care and other services in London. This page is a round-up of what we know so far.

What is a Sustainability and Transformation Plan?

NHS England describes Sustainability and Transformation Plans as: "…a new approach to help ensure that health and care services are built around the needs of local populations. To do this, every health and care system in England will produce a multi-year Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP), showing how local services will evolve and become sustainable over the next five years – ultimately delivering the Five Year Forward View vision of better health, better patient care and improved NHS efficiency." NHS England’s full statement can be read here.

Practically this means that each area, known as a 'footprint', must create a plan which shows it will deliver financially sustainable services which meet local needs by 2021, this plan must also fit with the objectives of the Five Year Forward View.  STP work is largely being led by a selection of CEOs and Accountable Officers from CCGs and NHS Trusts. Details of the senior leadership team are here.

A full list of the leaders for each footprint in England is here, this group is distinct from the senior leadership team referred to above. Details of the London footprints are below.

What do the STP footprints cover?

There are five STP footprints in London:

  • North West London, covering two million people across eight CCGs. Led by Dr Mohini Parmar, Chair, Ealing CCG.
  • North Central London, covering 1.4 million people across five CCGs. Led by David Sloman, Chief Executive, Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust.
  • North East London, covering 1.9 million people across seven CCGs. Led by Jane Milligan, Chief Officer, Tower Hamlets CCG.
  • South East London, covering 1.7 million people across six CCGs. Led by Amanda Pritchard, Chief Executive, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
  • South West London, covering 1.5 million people across six CCGs. Led by Kathryn Magson, Chief Officer, Richmond CCG.

A full list of footprints for England can be found here. The Health Service Journal produced this map of STP footprints at the start of March. Click on each area for details, the London areas provide details of the providers who are involved, which may be of particular interest.
