Five Year Forward View – two years on

24 October marks two years on from the launch of NHS England's Five Year Foward View. The document said it would stabilise general practice core funding withing two years.

The Forward View was also supposed to resolve problems around retention and recruitment. Our six-monthly workforce surveys have shown that there are significant gaps in the GP workforce and large numnbers of impending retirements. In the June survey 49% of responding practices had a vacancy for a member of staff and 43% had a GP planning to retire in the next three years.

Dr Michelle Drage, our Chief Executive said:

“Our general practices are the backbone of the NHS - providing for 90% of patients' needs on a paltry eight percent of its budget - and falling.

“The NHS Five Year Forward View provided a vision of transferring investment from acute trusts to primary care, more GP training posts, better premises and above all “stabilising core funding for general practice nationally over the next two years”. To secure the future of general practice for Londoners we need more resource and more support. And we need it now, before it is too late.”
