New courses: owning your practice premises and cervical sample takers training

Following feedback from practices on their training needs, we are pleased to be able to offer two new training opportunities.

Owning your practice premises: the essentials

Running for the first time on Thursday 26 September, more details here.

This afternoon workshop is for practices whose partners (or former partners) own or co-own their premises, or for partners hoping to ‘buy in’. The workshop is primarily aimed at GPs, but some practices may choose to send their practice manager, with the afternoon being made up of a combination of presentations and discussion.

The workshop will be delivered by Hempsons Solicitors. Lynne Abbess, Senior Consultant and Bryn Morgan, Partner will be leading the seminar and will be joined by their colleagues Myles Evans, Senior Solicitor and Kirsty Odell, Solicitor.

15-minute consultations for initial free legal advice can be pre-booked, starting one hour before and one hour after the event to allow attendees to talk to the presenters personally about their issues. Please email Rizwana.Ahmed@lmc.org.uk to arrange the consultation.

Cervical sample takers training

Over 300 nurses have successfully completed the academic GPN Training Programme. Students who completed the course provided feedback to say they would like clinical skills training in cervical cytology and immunisations. In response to this, we are introducing our two-day Initial Training for Cervical Sample Takers course, running on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 November.

The aim of the course is to provide knowledge and skills to enable the attendee, on completion, to take cervical samples correctly and safely and to be able to answer any questions women may have about the cervical sample process and outcomes.

“Every year approximately three million women have the intimate examination of having a cervical sample taken, so it is essential that practitioners are given training that meets the requirement set by the NHS Cervical screening programme enabling them to give care which is of the highest standard. The initial cervical takers training which is being introduced by Londonwide LMCs meets this requirement and gives the attendee the skills and knowledge to confidently take cervical samples and answer any questions that women may have” - Val McMunn, course author.

The course follows the guidance given by Public Health England in relation to the training of cervical sample takers and incorporates the competency framework CHS37.

The course consists of two taught days, a practical element with a final requirement of achieving 20 adequate samples, a colposcopy clinic visit with a reflection of the visit documented, a visit to the laboratory or the completion of a virtual tour.
