London GPs amongst most influential in the UK

Pulse magazine’s annual list of the 50 most influential GPs in the UK was published at the start of September.

In its seventh year, the Power 50 recognised Dr Michelle Drage for her work on behalf of London GPs and the profession. This year saw a special mention for our #GPStateofEmergency campaign and Londonwide LMC’s successful legal challenge to breach notices given to practices that closed early on Christmas and New Year’s Eve 2013.

Dr Katie Bramall-Stainer, Londonwide LMCs new Medical Director for North West London, made her debut to the list following her strong speaking performances at the LMC Special Conference earlier this year.

Dr Jackie Applebee, Chair of Tower Hamlets LMC, was included for her ongoing work supporting colleagues in Tower Hamlets and championing vulnerable patient groups, and for her passionate call to arms during discussions about industrial action earlier this year.

Dr Paul O’Reilly, Chair of Westminster LMC, was named a ‘local hero’ in recognition of almost 30 years of work with the homeless. Dr O’Reilly regularly gives up his evenings to walk around Westminster, checking on the welfare of rough sleepers and signposting them to his practice. As part of recognising Dr O'Reilly's work Pulse visited his practice, with London GP trainee Dr Nishma Manek writing about his practice's work.

Other London GPs on the list include:

  • Sir Sam Everington for his work on new models of care,
  • Dr Clare Gerada for her work supporting GPs facing burnout,
  • Professor Azeem Majeed for his work influencing Public Health England’s policy on the NHS Health Check, and
  • Dr Charlotte Benjamin for her work improving mental health services in Barnet.
