General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) update for practices

The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) and the government have released further guidance on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other related data issues.

The ICO have published the guide to data protection, which covers the Data Protection Act 2018 and the GDPR which covers the following areas:

  • Introduction to data protection
  • Guide to the GDPR
  • Guide to law enforcement processing
  • Guide to intelligence services processing
  • Key data protection themes

The government recently confirmed that practices will not be given the right to charge for subject access requests (SARs) from patients. Margot James, culture, media and sport minister, has stated that allowing practices the right to charge for information requests would “weaken the rights of patients”.

The General Practitioners Committee (GPC) are pursuing this issue at national level.

The ICO have issued revised guidance and there is a useful section on rights of access and ‘what about requests made on behalf of others?’.

Further ICO guidance on the GDPR is available by clicking here.
